Harrogate Town's Jack Muldoon flattered to be nominated for top PFA award

The 32-year-old, who finished 2020/21 as the Sulphurites' leading goal-scorer, is one of six men in contention for the title of Professional Footballers Association(PFA) League Two Fans' Player of the Year. And 15-goal Muldoon said he was flattered to be nominated alongside the likes of Cambridge United's Paul Mullin - the division's most prolific marksman - and Bolton Wanderers striker Eoin Doyle. "It's nice to be put in the same bracket as those types of players, these lads are on this list because obviously they're some of the best in the league," he told the Harrogate Advertiser. "It's good to be in and amongst them, it's good to get the recognition and if fans of other clubs have noticed my performances against their team then I'm pleased. "I suppose I was a little bit surprised to find out that I was on the list, but not that surprised because I know that I have had a decent season. "With 15 goals and five assists I was involved in almost 40 per cent of our goal-contributions for the season, which I don't think is too bad an effort." Muldoon, who has finished as Harrogate's top-scorer in each of his three campaigns at Wetherby Road, could well have ended up with even more goals to his name last term had he not been rested for eight matches between the end of January and early March following the emergence of loan signing Josh March. "A lot of my friends and different people have said to me that if I hadn't had that spell out of the team I would have got to 20 for the season," he added. "But you never know. I might have picked up an injury if I hadn't had that rest, it maybe did me some good, although obviously I always want to be playing week in, week out. "I potentially could have had a few more to my name, but to finish up with 15 goals in open play - none of which were penalties - I'm still very happy. "And the assists I got, when you're putting it on a plate for your team-mates, to me that's just as good as scoring one myself." Muldoon will be closing in on his 33rd birthday by the time 2021/22 draws to a close, but having enjoyed such a stellar campaign last term, the former Lincoln City attacker is confident that he can deliver the goods once again this season coming. He said: "I always aim for the 20-mark at the start of every season. I've been the top-scorer in each of my three seasons at Harrogate and I think if things had played out differently I could have reached that target the last two years. "Before 2019/20 was abandoned due to lockdown I had scored 17 and there were still something like 10 games to go. "There's no reason why I can't score a similar amount again this year. There are so many variables that you cannot control but I'm not going to lose my ability over the summer. "If I approach this season with the same attitude and keep my standards just as high then I'm confident I can do well again."
