Criminal prosecutions falling in North Yorkshire, amid criticism over underfunded justice system

Fewer crimes are leading to prosecutions in North Yorkshire, amid warnings of a “crumbling” legal system.

Legal experts say a lack of police resources is leading to cases being shelved, following a fall in prosecutions across England and Wales.

New Ministry of Justice data shows that 16,239 offences reported by North Yorkshire Police end up in prosecution over in 2018 – 10% fewer than three years earlier.

Of those, 9,823 proceedings were summary motoring offences, such as speeding and driving whilst disqualified, up from 8,347 in 2015.
